There is only one point you can start from, and that is right where you are right now. You cannot start from your past, and you should not wait to get to the future before you start. Only one option left, start now, start where you are.
All you have is now
The past is gone, and the future is not promised. Where you are is where you are, and you can start or continue to take steps towards where you want to be. All you have is this moment, right now, right here. This day is the first day of the rest of your life. This moment is the first moment of the rest of your life. What decisions can you make today, right now, that will impact the rest of your life positively.
As we grow, I have found that life does not get any easier, but we can make it work, by the decisions we make. The decision to live life to the fullest, on our own terms, in spite of life’s challenges.
What is stopping you?
There are two things that usually stops people from starting now right where they are:
1. Failure of the past
The past is in the past, and there is nothing we can do to go back in time. Start where you are right now, and decide to make the mistakes of the past a stepping stone, and not a restraining wall.
Thomas Edison who has been said to be America’s greatest inventor, is popularly quoted to have said
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Think about that for a moment. He did not consider his past mistakes, to affect what he believed he could accomplish. He simply stood up from each setback, learnt from it, and kept moving forward towards his goal.
You can do the same. Don’t let the past hold you back.
2. Fear of the future
On the flip side of the coin is worrying about the future, and being uncertain of what it holds. You may ask, what if I give it my all, and it doesn’t work out? Well, you will never know if you don’t try. Prepare as best as you can, and just decide to try. It may not work out the way you planned, but you would have learnt something valuable for the future.
I think of it this way, I have a lifetime to make mistakes and keep trying until I get it right. At the same time, I have only one lifetime to get it right, so I have no time to second guess and be indecisive. I either leave it all on the table or live knowing that I haven’s given myself a fair shot at an extraordinary life.
Start where you are
You have only one life to live, only 1 life to make all the mistakes and keep moving. Only one life to make an impact. You have to leave yourself no other option, but to succeed, and be all you were created to be.
Remember – “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. Choose to take that single step now, why wait?
As always, I look forward to reading your comments.
